Welcome to the Legion!

This story comes to us from new Legion of Leia contributor Anastasia Washington! Stay tuned for more of her work.

Genre films are known for giving a mixed impression of women, Strong yet helpless, Indecisive and emotional. We have seen women through the eyes of the genre and shook our heads.

When the strain was being advertised I was stoked. I was ready to dive right in, so that’s exactly what I did. And while my toe is still in the pool, I have one major complaint. Can this show have one likeable female character? Lately I have asked my friends that watch the show. Do you like any of the women on The Strain? The answer is always no. And the quandary is… why?

I know that some people like to compartmentalize writers. She writes amazing male characters, or he write strong females. But really what I want to hear is this author writes strong characters. Realistic characters, A variety in extraordinary situations. And I think that’s what is severely lacking in this show. They are so busy being “female” they are forgetting to be contributing characters instead of road blocks in the story line.

Sad to say I haven’t seen it yet on this show, yet I still watch every week in hopes that one of these women will rise to the occasion. These actresses of course are not at fault, but the flaw lies in the generalization of females, the stereotype if you will. I won’t step up and help you because you cheated on me, or I won’t kill monsters that are plaguing this city because its icky and its wrong. This is not a woman, this is a girl. And it’s about time a woman stepped on the screen of The Strain.

Why can’t the woman realize the danger and step up. Not one has. And in a city as large as New York, how can there not be one single woman willing and able to be useful in this catastrophe. Can I just get one? Waiting Strain and I’ll tune in next week to see if I get one.
