Welcome to the Legion!

On Sunday night, the Legion of Leia was lucky enough to attend the 2014 Geekie Awards. Jenna Busch was one of the event’s illustrious nominees in the category of Best Personality, and one of about 50 women who were honored with nominations for their contributions to the wonderful world of all things Geek.

The highlight of the evening was seeing one of our heroes, Gale Anne Hurd, accept the Stan Lee Lifetime Achievement Award from Generalissimo himself. After sharing just a sampling of Gale’s many achievements (Terminator, Aliens, “The Walking Dead”), Stan stated, “Gale didn’t just open doors for women in Hollywood. She kicked them down!”

For her part, Gale seemed delighted to share her own nerdy beginnings in a room full of her people, and meet fellow honoree, Geek of the Year Levar Burton.

All of that said, the true magic of the Geekies is that it gives fresh, up and coming talent a chance to have their work recognized in a room of their peers, not to mention a shot at having their heroes hand them the coveted Geekie Award.

Winners took home trophies in twelve different categories and six of those categories featured women creators. First, I have to give a shout out to my very favorite comic book dealer at House of Secrets, Amy Dallen and her “Talkin’ Comics Weekly” producer Jenni Powell, who accepted the Geekie for Best Podcast or Vlog.

In other categories, Judith Ann Grivich won the award for Best Cosplay for her Bioshock Big Daddy Bouncer, Lauren Bregman of Castle Corsetry accepted the Geekie for Fashion & Armor, and Jenny Lorenzo won the Best Personality award (by what we can only assume was the narrowest margin ever, though of course we’re super biased).

Best Short Film was awarded to the team behind The Hitchhiker, including producer Melissa Panzer. And Michelle Specht, one of the stars of the web series Star Trek Continues, was on hand to help the show’s creative team celebrate their Geekie Win.
