Happy Thanksgiving to the astronauts and cosmonauts on the International Space Station! Commander Barry “Butch” Wilmore of NASA; Flight Engineer Terry Virts of NASA; Flight Engineers Anton Shkaplerov, Alexander Samokutyaev, and Elena Serova of Russia’s Roscosmos; and Italian Flight Engineer Samantha Cristoforetti of the European Space Agency are getting something of a traditional turkey dinner tomorrow, way above the earth.
The “traditional holiday fare with a space-food flair” (described in NASA’s blog post) will include ” irradiated smoked turkey, thermostabilized candied yams and freeze-dried green beans and mushrooms. The meal also will feature NASA’s own freeze-dried cornbread dressing — just add water. Dessert features thermostabilized cherry-blueberry cobbler.” Um, yum?
Here is something pretty cool, though. In the future, the ISS crew may get to eat fresh sweet potatoes. They may be one of the crops chosen to be grown up there. Hell yeah, science!
