It’s been over 20 years since any single comic book issue sold over a million copies, but that’s all about to change on January 14, 2015, when Marvel releases the highly anticipated Star Wars #1. Comicbook.com confirmed that the issue, which marks the return of the Star Wars publishing rights to Marvel after over two decades at Dark Horse Comics, has sold over 1 million copies into the direct market.
Obviously, enthusiasm at Marvel is running high and series writer Jason Aaron expressed that sentiment to the comic news outlet: “I’m super thrilled, of course. I’ve been saying for a while that 2015 is gonna be a very good year to be writing Star Wars. This only proves it. Excitement is already building for the new film coming next December, and we’re just lucky we get to be the first big new Star Wars story coming right out of the gate. So yeah, I can’t wait for people to see what we’ve put together.”
The series will have artwork by fan-favorite John Cassady (Astonishing X-Men, Uncanny Avengers), colors by Laura Martin, and will take place in between Episode IV: A New Hope, and Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back. It will also ship with a staggering 35 (!) variant covers.
1 million copes in a day and age where the highest-selling monthly title hovers around 50-60,000? That is a damn impressive feat, and a much-needed shot in the arm for the industry. The real question is, can the new Marvel books deliver on the hype, sustain strong sales numbers, and win back salty Dark Horse/Expanded Universe loyalists? All I know is, if Jaxxon the green space bunny doesn’t show up, we riot!
