New Horizons is the first probe sent to Pluto, a dwarf planet located 3 billion miles from Earth. New Horizons launched to Pluto from Kennedy Space Center in Florida on Jan 19 2006.
The probe is scheduled to arrive on Pluto on July 14 2015. In order to conserve energy, the probe occasionally deactivates (hibernates) along its journey. When it wakes up, the probe captures breathtaking photos, such as this one of Jupiter and one of its moons.
On Saturday, December 6, 2014, the New Horizons woke up from its last scheduled hibernation. New Horizons, full of cameras, is expected to be sending back pictures, with the anticipated time of Pluto images by January 15, 2015. Since New Horizons is going to be much closer to Pluto than any other Earth-projected device, its images are expected to be sharper than any other previously collected images, including those taken by the Hubble telescope.
