Welcome to the Legion!

The geek community is continually flooded with a wide array of various events that are happening every day. Some of the events happens in the geek world are over-the-top amazing, and some of them are despicably bad. This list is dedicated to some of those big moments that went through this past year. Perhaps with this list we can (hopefully) learn from our mistakes and make 2015 a fantastic year for all those awesome geeks out there.

The Top 5 Worst Geek Moments of 2014

Gamergate

worst_geek_moment_gamergate

In the latter half of 2014, the video game community went under a lot of scrutiny when Gamergate first began. It all started when developer Zoe Quinn was publicly attacked online, quickly escalating into a slippery slope of sexist comments against her and for those women who tried to back her up. The most high profile of those women in the gaming community, Anika Sarkeesian, was faced with degrading messages and threats. After a certain point Gamergate became so big and controversial it was difficult to even see where it was going, what the argument is about, or how it’s ever going to end. Seriously, I’m still a little confused as to what’s going on because the internet trolls have made such a mess with this topic. It ultimately damaged everyone’s outlook on the video game community and now raises big questions as to how everyone can move on from this point and ultimately dissolve the sexism that reigns supreme in video games, but sadly it looks like we’re a long ways away from that kind of resolution.

Controversial Spider-Woman Cover

Marvel comics have been doing a fantastic job throughout most of this year with their various titles, that was until they released an image for Milo Manara’s Spider-Woman #1 cover. The waves of disapproval on the oddly kneeling super heroine were loud and clear, so much that Marvel ultimately pulled that particular cover from shelves. Proper proportions or not, the positioning and almost body paint-like clothing completely downgraded Spider-Woman as a wonderful super heroine and reduced her to a big piece of ass. At least Marvel is able to learn their lesson a lot quicker than their thick-headed publication brethren, which I’m going to talk about next.

DC Comics’ Poor Marketing/Story Decisions

Fans have been continually shaking their heads in disappointment over the decisions that DC has been making on their comics and merchandise throughout this year. Seriously, who’s in charge of clearing these things? First there was the whole controversy surrounding DC’s line of incredibly sexist superhero shirts which thankfully were pulled from shelves. Then female fans are constantly having to deal with DC’s constant blunders in comics like Batwoman and Batgirl, where our favorite empowering and progressive heroes have been degraded in some of the worst ways possible. To top it off, it’s been revealed that DC Comics has cancelled more than 52 titles ever since they began with their New 52 series. Maybe DC Comics should take the new year to clean house, go through their latest comics and figure out how not to come off as an embarrassing publication, but rather the one that many have loved and hope to still love in years to come.

Diversity Creates Unnecessary Controversy

It’s been a little painful to read some opinions pertaining to large geek events in 2014. Personally it sounded pretty cool to hear that another person would be holding the mighty Mjolnir, and this time it was a woman. Some fans didn’t take too kindly to the news, to the point where their comments were embarrassing for the comic book community. Then when fans were graced with the wonderful teaser trailer for Star Wars: The Force Awakens, a slew of stupid racism comments popped up online against actor John Boyega. Sticks and stones may break bones, but those hateful comments were brushed off his shoulder. In fact, Boyega gave a pretty good response to all the haters out there. Sometimes I wish that people would just sit back and accept the change, move forward with the positive, progressive thinking instead of being stuck in the past. Sigh.

DashCon 2014

Now I’ve been to a fair share of large and small conventions throughout the country, but thankfully I got to miss out on the train wreck that was DashCon. The fan convention quickly descended into the darkest pit of unorganized hell that left a lot of people with depleted accounts, little to no hotel rooms and incredible rage over the whole event. The unholy mess with the venue, the way the organizers treated their guests and how it all came tumbling to pieces was just a general embarrassment for any people who were associated with the convention. This is one event that more than likely won’t be happening again, that is unless they’re able to mend everything.

The Top 5 Best Geek Moments of 2014

Marvel’s Phase 3 Announcement

Kevin Feige and the rest of the team over at Marvel Studios had to go all-out in order to unveil their plans for Phase 3 of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. They made a show out of it, taking over the El Capitan in Hollywood, California and showcasing what they have in store for fans for the next few years. Boy, it’s pretty damn cool. Marvel continually shows that they’re paving the way for diversity in the movie superhero world as they revealed their plans on making a Captain Marvel and a Black Panther movie. Personally I cannot wait to see a Captain Marvel movie. Dear God I can’t wait for that film!

Star Wars: The Force Awakens Trailer

This year’s Black Friday turned into an early Christmas for every Star Wars fan around the world as the official trailer for J.J. Abrams’ highly anticipated sequel Star Wars: The Force Awakens arrived online. In just minutes the fever of anticipation for the latest installment of the ridiculously popular sci-fi franchise spread rampant throughout the internet, and I must admit I caught it myself. The only cure for it is the continually rising excitement to see the movie when it comes out on December 18, 2015.

Deadpool Movie Gets the Green Light

Praise be Chimichangas, we’re finally getting a Deadpool movie! Back in July, some sneaky folks leaked out some super awesome test footage for a possible Deadpool movie. Ryan Reynolds reprised his role motion capture-style as the wise cracking mercenary, and everything about the footage delighted fans across the internet. In the blink of an eye, Twentieth Century Fox realized that there was a bunch of people totally interested in a Deadpool film (duh) and decided to finally give the project a go. The awesome screenplay was written up by Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick with Tim Miller in the director’s chair. The Deadpool movie is currently slated for release in 2016 and I can’t wait to see it!

The Big Twin Peaks Announcement

Who knew that David Lynch and company would still be on board to give fans another taste of Twin Peaks after all these years? The creative minds behind Twin Peaks and the cast have formally announced to fans that they will be returning to the mysterious quiet town in 2016 on Showtime. This came right off the heels of the incredibly awesome and (now mostly) complete Twin Peaks Blu-ray anniversary set. There hasn’t been much else announced about the upcoming episodes, but fans like myself are super excited to see what will happen.

New Batch of Great Fictional Women in Comics

best_geek_moment_lumberjanes

The awesome female characters in Ms. Marvel, Lumberjanes, Captain Marvel, Sex Criminals, The Wicked + The Divine, and just so many other comics this year have been so much fun to read throughout this year. There’s such an incredible variety of stellar female characters, each one of them powerful in their own superhuman or non-magical ways, that just make 2014 a fantastic year in comics. While DC Comics has continually had a few hiccups on their end, other comic publications like Image and Marvel have been absolutely killing it in the badass female department, and not to mention providing some of the best new comic series that you must read. If you haven’t grabbed any of these titles just yet, go to your local comic book store and do so. It’s worth it.
