Welcome to the Legion!

It’s been a great day for diversity in comics (and kind of a bad one if you’re a misogynist or a fan of decades of convoluted continuity). Hot on the heels of DC’s plans to implement more “contemporary tonality” and spotlight more female heroes and heroes of color like Cyborg and Black Canary in their new post-New 52 universe, Marvel has announced an all-female Avengers title called A-Force.

The big news was supposed to be dropped on The View this morning, but USA Today broke the story about the superheroine super-team first. A-Force will be written by fan-favorite female creators  G. Willow Wilson (Ms. Marvel, X-Men) and Marguerite Bennett (Angela: Asgard’s Assassin) and drawn by Jorge Molina (X-Men). There isn’t a full lineup yet, but we do know that several of the characters pictured on the Jim Cheung promo art above, like She-Hulk, Dazzler, Medusa—as well as a new cosmic character called Singularity—will be on the team.

“We’re having very interesting discussions in comics about gender, about competing ideologies, about how to be inclusive without making fans of the classic canon feel alienated. These are big questions for the whole industry right now and everybody is grappling to answer in fresh and relevant ways. So to be part of that is very, very cool for me,” Wilson told USA Today.

Look for the A-Force title this summer, when the Secret Wars event wraps.
