Welcome to the Legion!

Red_Sonja_Homs_970A remake of Red Sonja has been churning in the rumor mill for years.  However, it seems it has taken a huge step forward at Nu Image/Millennium Films after Christopher Cosmos was hired as the film’s writer.

The Hollywood Reporter says plans are currently in progress for the character, who was on the big screen back in 1985.  Hopefully the studios respond favorably to Christopher Cosmos’s update of Richard Fleischer’s previous Red Sonja film which starred Arnold Schwarzenegger and Brigitte Nielsen.

The details surround what direction Cosmos might take the character in have been very hush hush. There also has been no word on which film maker might join Cosmos on this Red Sonja reboot.

Red Sonja is from a Marvel comic.  It seems Marvel films are very favorable with fans, and you’ve got to strike while the iron is hot. The 1985 film revolved around Brigitte Nielson‘s vengeful, eponymous character who sets out to retrieve a magic orb from and evil queen. You can check out the original trailer below:

Red Sonja, the story of a female warrior, who was created by Conan the Barbarian author Robert E. Howard and comic writer Roy Thomas.  Popularized in the 70’s by a comic series from Marvel Comics with the tag line “She-Devil with a Sword”, the comic was revived in mid-2000’s by Dynamite Entertainment and is still going strong.

I think it would be amazing to see a Red Sonja reboot. With the influx of superhero movies Red Sonja‘s place in that universe seems fitting to me.  Who would you like to see play Red Sonja?

  • Since you’d be hard-pressed to find an actress that towers like Brigitte Nielson did, I think there should be three things they shoot for: acting chops, toughness, and (preferably) a natural redhead. Thus I submit Karen Gillian or Emma Stone. While the latter may not be a natural red, she pulls it off extremely well.
