Research conducted at University of Arizona* demonstrates how the body heals wounds, uncovering the science behind this universal process. A process of cell migration, where healthy cells move to the site of injury is one that was not well understood. Until now.

When an injury occurs, the cells at that site are destroyed, and a protein molecule, DII4, coordinates other cells to move to the wounded location and spread themselves out, creating new tissue. When cells move toward the wound site, they begin to specialize into leader and follower cells. The leader cells, which have messenger RNA expression, move to the front of the migration sequence, specifically following the DII4 molecule genetic code. The leader cells then send messages to the follower cells and the two groups of cells work together to protect the wound and create new tissue.

This research can help scientists better understand the spread of cancerous cells, diabetic wounds, as well as  potentially help create organ tissue and possibly even full organs for the people in need of transplants.
