Welcome to the Legion!

Fans of snarky, tousled-blonde Brits who battled demons and other occult forces every week on NBC this year were bummed when Buzzfeed’s Kate Aurthur reported the network had finally pulled the plug on Constantine, sending it directly to cancellation hell. But rumors of the show’s demise were somewhat exaggerated it seemed, and Arthur tweeted out a redaction later in the day:

Showrunner David Cerone also told Comicbook.com that the adventures of John Constantine were still clinging to life:

I just received confirmation from the corporate offices at NBC. I was assured that Constantine has not been canceled and our pitch meeting to discuss a potential second season remains on the books. By the way, this is a pitch meeting involving the president of Warner Bros and the entertainment heads of NBC. Nobody at this incredibly busy time of the development season has time to waste taking pointless meetings.

Now, is it fair to say that Constantine is a long shot? Sure, that’s fair to say. While we marginally improved a tough time slot for NBC, we’re a very expensive show to produce. A lot of NBC’s decision making will not doubt hinge on their new pilots and how they feel those new shows would fare as a companion piece to Grimm, versus a second season of Constantine.

Constantine never really caught fire with audiences, with many citing the “Friday night death slot” and a PG-rated take on some pretty hard R material as primary reasons. The ratings weren’t great, so back at the end of the fall, NBC decided not to extend their initial 13-episode order. A rumored move to the Syfy channel proved to be just that – a rumor, so as of right now the diehard Constantine fans who really glommed onto the show in the second half will have to hold on to the tiniest sliver of hope that NBC will renew.
