If you saw the 4th Season of Game of Thrones but would like a little reminder about what happened to get you ready and excited for Season 5, keep reading. If you have not seen Season 4, be warned, the post below contains spoilers; keep reading at your own risk.
First and foremost, Joffrey was poisoned by Olenna Tyrell, the blame falling onto Tyrion. Tyrion asks for a trial by combat but Cersei has bribed Bronn (who was to be Tyrion’s champion) and instead married him off. Tyrion is desperate when Oberyn Martell volunteers to be his champion instead, seeking vengeance against Gregor Clegane (who represents the Lannister court and killed Oberyn’s sister). Both men get critically injured during combat with Oberyn getting his head smashed and Gregor getting poisoned. However, Qyburn (a medically trained maester), states that he can bring him back.
Since Margaery was unable to marry Joffrey, she then seduces Tommen, Joffrey’s younger brother. In the meantime, Cersei, unwilling to marry Loras, flees from the kingdom and reunites to Jaime. Jaime takes an unexpected turn when he frees Tyrion and helps him escape, saving his life. Before Tyrion leaves, however, he finds his lover, Shae, in his father’s chambers and chokes her. He then confronts his father, who keeps calling Shae a “whore.” Furious, Tyrion shoots his father with a crossbow in the privy (that almost sounds like an accusation in Clue).
At the wall, Jon Snow is trying to defend the land against the White Walkers, while mourning the death of Ygritte. He brings the Wildlings in to help and is trying to get the people of the Knight’s Watch to unite against the White Walkers. Stannis Baratheon arrives at the Wall as well and wants assistance in becoming King.
Daenerys’ dragons are growing big, bigger than she can contain. She keeps two smaller ones (Rhaegal and Viserion) in the catacombs and releases the bigger one (Drogon). She is also freeing slaves and having a relationship with Daario. When she learns that Jorah was spying on her, she dismisses him.
Petyr (Littlefinger) managed to sneak Sansa out of King’s Landing and the two arrive at Lysa’s house, Sansa posing as Littlefinger’s niece. Lysa wishes to marry Sansa off to her son and marries Littlefinger, who is still hot for Sansa. When Littlefinger comes on to Sansa, Lysa is furious and threatens them both, but Petyr throws Lysa over the cliff, telling others that she committed suicide.
Arya arrives to Lysa’s Black Gate but has just missed Sansa and Petyr. Arya is being held prisoner by the Hound. Brienne, loyal to the late Catelyn Stark, kills the Hound to save Arya from his grip.
