Hey Legion! Jenna Busch here. Since I started the site last May 4th, the thing that has meant the most to me is getting to speak to kids about why we exist and why geekdom and fandom is important for both men and women. I recently wrote a story about the representation of women and girls in STEM (science, technology, engineering and math) careers on television and in films for Metro and I was contacted by teacher Michael Espinos about speaking to his seventh and eight grade classes at Heineman Middle School. The kids read the article and wrote some amazing responses, which we discussed on the day of the talk.
I cannot begin to tell you what an honor it was to talk to these classes about everything from the way women are represented, to the definition of feminism is, to why studios still tend to put female characters in a box. Their questions were fantastic and what they said has stuck with me since. Check out the talk below.
