Welcome to the Legion!

Spiderman

Deadline reports that Sony is teaming up with The Lego Movie directors Phil Lord and Christopher Miller on an animated Spider-Man film.  The announcement came at Cinemacon in Vegas by studio chief Tom Rothman.  Lord and Miller will be writing and producing the animated feature, no word on if they will be directing it as well.

According to the Sony release, the animated film “will exist independently’ of the live action Spider-Man movie that will be part of the Marvel Universe.

Sony has had a some what troubled past with Spider-Man over the past few years.  They had great success with the trilogy of films from Sam Raimi.  It then re-booted the character with Andrew Garfield (whom I loved in the role) where they experienced some mixed reviews.  The Amazing Spider-Man 2 failed to meet box office expectations.  However, without that less than stellar box office performance, Spider-Man may not have joined the Marvel cinematic universe where many believe he should already have been.

Avi Arad, Matt Tolmach and former Sony chief Amy Pascal will also produce the film along with Lord and Miller.  As a refresher, Lord and Miller are known for their collaboration on The Lego Movie, Cloudy with a Chance of Meatballs and 21 and 22 Jumpstreet.  All noteworthy films.

The announcement also contained a release date for the film of July 20, 2018.

I’ve always been on the fence about Spider-Man.  I like the character but would really like to see him get a really strong story line.  While I am sure Marvel will do him justice in Civil War, I’m also counting on this animated film to breathe much needed life into Spider-Man.  I can say this, the comic books are really bringing me into the Spidy-Verse.  Hopefully the movies will do the same.
