Welcome to the Legion!

not so good morning

Matt wakes up on his couch. His wounds have been stitched, and bloody bandages litter the floor. Foggy reveals that Matt had asked him to call Claire before passing out. Commenting that she was, in fact, hot, Foggy angrily questions whether Matt is really blind.

Flashback to when Matt and Foggy first met at college when they were assigned to be roommates. Foggy reveals that he remembers the story of what happened to Matt when he was younger, and calls him a hero. The two bond quickly, Foggy expressing his desire that there be no secrets between them.

Back in the present, Matt has just finished explaining the ‘world on fire’ way he perceives his surroundings, which Foggy, feeling deceived, boils down to, “you can see.” In addition to his anger, Foggy also appears to be feeling hurt that Matt didn’t tell him, but told Claire. Finally, Foggy asks the question that has been weighing on him since the previous night – “Did you blow up those buildings? Shoot those cops?” Matt tearfully denies it, blaming Fisk. Foggy is reprimanding Matt for working outside the law when Karen calls Matt’s phone. Foggy grabs the phone before Matt can, saying that she deserves to know. Matt begs him not to tell her. Foggy declines the call, then, thinking of all the times he or Karen has tried to reach Matt unsuccessfully, asks accusatorially, “is that what you do…just hit ignore?” Karen then calls Foggy’s phone. This time he picks up, telling her that Matt was hit by a car. She immediately wants to come over, but Foggy harshly tells her to stay at the office. Upset that he just lied, Foggy insists that Matt tell him everything.

rooftop garden

Fisk meets with Gao in some private, rooftop garden. She hints that she believes Fisk knew that Nobu would try to take on the man in the mask personally and warns him about Nobu’s clan. She also questions if Fisk will soon turn on her. She comments that Fisk has changed since they first met, from being singularly focused to having a divided mind. She warns him that this internal conflict is unsustainable, and he must soon choose…”or others will choose for you.”

Urich visits his wife in the hospital. She has a lucid moment, and urges him to keep pursuing his story, “it’s not a job, it’s who you are.” The moment passes, and she greets him again. Just then his hospital administrator friend arrives to tell him that they were unable to give his wife a further extension of care.

Foggy opens the foot locker with Matt’s gear, questioning where it came from and where Matt learned to fight. Matt tells him about Stick, and how the old man helped him hone his abilities. Foggy demands to know exactly what those abilities are, becoming outraged to learn that Matt can listen to a person’s heartbeat and tell if they are lying.

Matt and Foggy on steps

Back in college, about to graduate, Matt and Foggy are out for a night on the town, when Matt almost slips and reveals that he has heightened senses. Talk turns to Matt’s father, and how he never wanted Matt to fight. They also talk about the future and how they will practice law together.

Urich is at his office, looking at pamphlets for hospice care facilities, when his editor comes in, offering him a promotion to editor of a different section, which would take him off the beat, but mean more money and better benefits. Urich needs to let him know in the next couple of days. After the editor leaves, Urich tries to look at the pamphlets, but his eye is drawn to the board full of clippings and playing cards.

Karen walks into the office while leaving a voice message for Foggy. She finds a shoebox on her desk, and is immediately suspicious. She is about to open it when Urich walks in from the other room. She begins to tell him about something she found at the County Clerk’s office, but he interrupts to call her attention to the box. It contains all of the newspaper clippings and playing cards from his board. He tells her that his priorities have changed because of his wife’s condition. She states that she recently heard about a nursing home, and insists that Urich go there with her to check it out.

Fisk, Wesley, and Leland converse in Fisk’s apartment, while finishing getting dressed up in formal attire. Fisk tells Leland about Nobu, then demands that he speak to Gao to reassure her that everything is okay. Leland expresses displeasure with how Fisk ahs been acting since he started seeing Vanessa.

Foggy gets a phone call from his and Matt’s police sergeant friend, Brett, informing him that the junkie who killed Mrs. Cardenas was found dead. Foggy questions Matt about whether he was responsible for that. Matt denies ever killing, which seems to comfort Foggy a little bit, but then Matt goes on to reveal that he tried to kill Fisk, horrifying his partner even further. Foggy calls Matt out on his hypocrisy in insisting that Foggy and Karen get at Fisk through the law, but Matt merely states that, “sometimes the law isn’t enough.”

interns

Flashback to when Matt and Foggy were interns at Landman & Zack. They sit with a large group of lawyers, including Landman, representing a corporation against a worker who was made sick by working there. Later, Foggy returns to the “broom closet” they use as a shared office, announcing to Matt that he heard the firm is going to offer them jobs. Matt seems less than thrilled at this prospect, asking Foggy if he thinks what happened earlier was right and if he wants to be a part of that. Foggy mournfully prepares for a life of poverty working as Matt’s partner.

first time vigilante

As evening begins to fall, Matt invites Foggy to say what is on his mind, leading Foggy to start yelling about how stupid Matt is being running around as a vigilante. He questions how Matt’s heightened senses led him to make that choice. Matt tells him the story of how he didn’t do anything for years, until he heard a nearby father abusing his daughter. The fact that there was no proof and therefore no legal means of redress pushed him to first put on black clothes and a mask and beat the crap out of somebody. Foggy points out that to be able to do what Matt does, he would have had to keep training all those years since Stick left, suggesting that, “maybe it isn’t only about justice…maybe it’s about you having an excuse to hit someone.” Matt shocks Foggy further by not denying it, and stating that he doesn’t want to stop.

Meanwhile, Karen and Urich talk about his wife while driving upstate, Urich stating that his wife would like Karen. They arrive at the nursing home, and Karen insists on looking around, even talking to one of the residents. She picks a room, clearly not at random. The old woman who lives there, a Mrs. Vistain, invites them in and they begin asking her questions. Seeing that she is not always completely lucid, Urich urges Karen to go, but she presses on with more questions about the woman’s previous marriages and her son…Wilson Fisk. Mrs. Vistain reveals that Wilson did something to stop his father, leading Karen to ask exactly what happened.

Fisk gives a speech at a formal benefit, with Vanessa at his side. He makes the rounds, thanking people for their donations, then runs in to Leland, who reports that, “it’s taken care of.” Fisk moves off to speak with Senator Cherryh, , a corrupt politician, leaving Leland, Vanessa, and Wesley to chat. Guests start collapsing, foam coming from their mouths. Vanessa drops her glass and starts to collapse also, Fisk hurrying to catch her.

Foggy warns Matt that he going to killed if he continues and that Matt’s actions have also put himself, Karen, and others in danger as well. Matt questions who else can stop Fisk, asking Foggy if he would have put on a mask if doing so would have prevented Mrs. Cardenas being killed. He insists that he is doing everything he can to make the world a “better place,” which sounds to Foggy a lot like Fisk’s rhetoric. Foggy also notes that Matt admitted to wanting to kill Fisk, which again seems like the sort of thing Fisk would do. Both men are in tears as Matt protests that the city needs him in his mask and Foggy concedes that there may be truth to that, but that, “I don’t. I only ever needed my friend.” Foggy states that he would not have kept this from Matt, and walks out.

Flashback to Matt and Foggy at Josie’s bar, apparently after they have left Landman & Zack and Matt has started acting as a vigilante, but before they have officially started their new firm. Foggy attempts to show Matt a sketch he made of a plaque with their firm’s name on it, but as it is drawn on a napkin, Matt can’t feel what it looks like. Foggy colorfully expresses the fact that he is scared about doing this, “but I trust you.”

Present day, at the office, Foggy looks at the plaque he had made. He throws it in the trash and walks out carrying a box.
