Welcome to the Legion!

Wilson Fisk wakes up gasping, as if from a nightmare. He stares at the white painting. He makes an omelet, and eats alone in his high-rise apartment. He goes into a walk in closet to select a suit. He has a drawer full of different cuff links but selects the same pair he always wears. He turns to look at himself in the mirror and sees himself as a young boy, covered in blood.

Matt’s apartment is still littered with debris from the fight with Stick. Matt is woken by the alarm clock and gets up slowly, apparently still overcome with emotions. The bracelet sits on the kitchen counter.

At office, Karen and Foggy discuss whether or not to let Matt in on their investigation, but he overhears as he comes in, forcing them to reveal what they are up to Matt advises them against pursuing it until Karen passionately defends her right to do so. Karen also reveals that they are working with Ben Urich. Matt decides to help them, but starts making rules for them to follow – first rule: “no more skulking around, asking to get hurt,” insisting that they fight using the law rather than force.

Fisk meets with Nobu, who is angry that the Black Sky was killed, while Fisk insists that he fulfilled the letter of their agreement. Nobu storms out, and Wesley questions Nobu’s role in Fisk’s plans. Fisk describes Nobu as a “necessary evil.”

Back in the 1970’s Fisk’s father campaigns for City Council with the intention of making money from bribes, while Fisk’s mother struggles to deal with a stack of unpaid bills. Fisk’s father reveals that he is paying for his campaign by loaning money from the mafia.

Modern day Fisk speaks on the phone with Vanessa, when he is interrupted by a call from Wesley informing him that Detective Blake has woken up. They discuss the logistics of killing Blake, who is guarded, with Fisk eventually deciding to meet with Blake’s partner, Hoffman to convince him to do the deed.

Matt, Karen, and Foggy work late at the law office, looking for information they can use. Matt finds something potentially linking Confederated Global with the tenements. Foggy wants to go out and track down Tully, but Matt insists he do so using the phone, making that rule #2. Karen reports that Blake woke up.

Fisk and Wesley meet with Hoffman, blaming Blake for much of what happened the night he was shot because he failed to inform anyone that the man in black took the list of locations and was able to find Vladimir. Hoffman still expresses reluctance, citing his long history of friendship with Blake, but Fisk just offers more money.

At the hospital, Hoffman arrives to visit Blake. The guard questions him, but lets him pass. Inside the room, he takes out a syringe and inserts it into one of Blake’s tubes. Blake wakes up, just as Matt appears behind Hoffman and renders him unconscious. Matt informs Blake that he will be dead in moments, and asks him for all information he has about Wilson Fisk. The other police officers finally succeed in breaking into the room to find Blake dead and Hoffman unconscious.

Leland complains to Fisk about having been attacked, while Fisk’s tailor takes Leland’s measurements to make an armor-lined suit. Fisk promises to move Leland somewhere safe and surround him with guards. Wesley arrives to report on what happened at the hospital.

father son

Young Wilson gets comforted by his mother after he was beaten up by an older boy, when his father, who lost the election, comes in, demanding to know what happened. His father insists that Wilson come with him to find the other boy, who they find smashing bottles with a baseball bat. The boy calls Mr. Fisk a loser and accidentally bumps him with the bat while turning away. Mr. Fisk begins attacking him, taking the bat and beating him severely, then insisting that Wilson join in and kick the boy repeatedly while he is down, despite Wilson’s obvious reluctance and discomfort.

Grown up Wilson Fisk wakes up gasping, as if from a nightmare. He stares at the white painting. He makes an omelet, and eats alone in his high-rise apartment. He goes into a walk in closet to select a suit. He has a drawer full of different cuff links but selects the same pair he always wears. He has almost completed his routine when Wesley calls to inform him that Madame Gao is on her way to meet him at his apartment.

madame gao

Gao reveals that she speaks English and other languages, and knows that Fisk speaks Mandarin and Japanese. She then dismisses Wesley and tells Fisk that Nobu and Leland are unhappy with Fisk. She accuses him of having become sloppy and tells him to get his house in order, or else she will work directly with Nobu and Leland, cutting Fisk out. As soon as she departs, Fisk explodes with rage, overturning his table and yelling at an alarmed Wesley to, “GET OUT!!!”

Mr. Fisk tells young Wilson to stare at the wall, which looks nearly identical to the white painting, and think about the kind of man he wants to be. As Mr. Fisk puts on his cuff links to go meet the Mafiosi he owes money to, his wife reprimands him for having taken that loan. Mr. Fisk loses his temper and starts beating Wilson’s mother while the boy stares at the wall.

Adult Wilson still stands in his apartment, staring out over the city. When Wesley comes in, Fisk barks at him that, “If I needed you, I would’ve asked.” Wesley, who Fisk has previously described as not only an assistant but a friend, softly replies, “I don’t think that’s always true, sir,” before revealing that he has brought Vanessa over and departing. Fisk begs Vanessa to go, but she reminds him that he had promised to be honest with her and insists that he tell her the thing he is afraid of her finding out.

The flashback resumes with Mr. Fisk beating his wife, who he blames for having lost the election. Wilson gets up from staring at the wall, grabs a hammer that was lying out, and tells his father to stop. Mr. Fisk then insults Wilson and begins to turn back toward Mrs. Fisk. Wilson hits his father in the back of the head with the hammer, then hits him repeatedly while he is down, with blood splattering everywhere. Wilson’s mother soothes him, gives him his father’s cuff links, and then cuts the body into pieces.

Fisk finishes telling the story to Vanessa, revealing that the reason he still wears the cuff links is to, “remind myself…[t]hat I’m not my father! That I’m not a monster!” She assures him that he isn’t.

Urich is about to get in his car and out of the rain when the Devil of Hell’s Kitchen approaches. Matt denies having caused the explosions and shooting the cops. Urich initially thinks Matt is asking him to write the other side of the story, but Matt asks him to expose Wilson Fisk. Urich asks Matt what information he has, but is disappointed to hear it amounts to little more than forced confessions and an unsubstantiated report of Blake’s final words. Matt assures him that their evidence doesn’t need to be strong enough to put Fisk away, “Just drag him into the light.”

Wilson Fisk wakes up gasping, as if from a nightmare. He looks briefly at the white painting, then turns to see Vanessa in bed with him. As Urich drafts his story in voice over, Fisk eats with Vanessa in his high-rise apartment. She accompanies him into a walk in closet to help him select a suit. He has a drawer full of different cuff links and she selects the new pair for him to wear. He looks at himself in the mirror and sees himself.

coming out

In his office, Urich continues writing his story, then turns on the TV to see Wilson Fisk giving a press conference with Vanessa and Leland by his side. Matt, Karen, and Foggy each watch the same broadcast separately. Fisk’s speech uses many of the same keywords and phrases as Urich had been writing, causing him to delete his draft. Fisk ends his speech, stating his name before the entire city, and receiving cheers. Matt hurls the laptop he had been listening to across his apartment.
