Welcome to the Legion!

quicksilver and scarlet witch

I find it so frustrating to read comic books that come from either Marvel or DC. It almost all has to do with decades upon decades of liquid continuity and retcons. Here’s an example: for a good 30 years, we were under the impression that twins Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver were the progeny of Magneto, and therefore mutants. It’s true that the finer details of their origin change about as much as Catwoman’s, but the constant has always been that Magneto was the baby daddy. Now…not so much.

Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch have made two appearances in two separate Marvel movies: Age of Ultron and Days of Future Past. Both come from completely different movie studios competing with each other. The latter movie implies that Magneto is the father. Because Disney/Marvel doesn’t own the X-Men, and therefore the term “Mutants,” Age of Ultron couldn’t necessarily mention Pietro and Wanda’s parentage. So they strip them of their mutant heritage and changed their origin all together. Then the comics started casting doubt on whether or not Magneto was indeed the twins’ father. Then after Age of Ultron premiered, Pietro and Wanda’s background is being retconned again. Oi, this is getting more insane than watching an episode of Maury.

ComicVine put up a preview of next week’s Uncanny Avengers #4One page offers the “true” revelation of Pietro and Wanda’s origin:

Uncanny Avengers #4

In case you’re wondering, no that is not Ultron. The guy in question is known as the High Evolutionary, “a being obsessed with genetically perfecting the human race beyond their current form, after giving himself superhuman intelligence and abilities through genetic experimentation.” According this page, Django and Marya Maximoff, one known to only be the twins’ foster family, have always been their biological parents and not Magneto. Now it begs to question whether or not they were mutants at all. Were they instead normal babies touched by some super-science to manufacture super-powered beings more powerful than Mutants? Or…what?

See? This is why I hate big universes with 30+ years of baggage.

What does this mean for Quicksilver and Scarlet Witch on the whole? Absolutely nothing. They’re still superheroes, they still work with the Avengers. This revelation simply legitimizes the MCU’s interpretation of the twins while simultaneously disparages FOX’s version in Days of Future Past. But the real question is: Why even bother?
