Caitlyn Jenner will receive ESPN’s Arthur Ashe Courage Award at the televised ESPY award ceremony next month.  The announcement that Jenner would receive the award was made just minutes after Jenner revealed herself as Caitlyn on the cover of Vanity Fair.

In Jenner’s 1976 record setting performance in which she won the decathlon gold medal, Jenner who the identified as Bruce Jenner, became a national hero.

The Arther Ashe award has been presented every year since the sports-related ESPYs were established in 1993.  Michael Sam, last years receipt became the first NFL prospect to come forth as gay.  Other award winners have been “Good Morning America” co-host Robin Roberts and Tenessee women’s basketball coach Pat Summit.

“In the past few months, the overwhelming outpouring of support from all over the world for my journey has been incredible.” Jenner said in a statement released by ESPN.  “However being honored with this award, which is named after one of my heroes, is truly special.  For the first time this July, I will be able to stand as my true self in front of my peers.”

The ESPY awards will be held in Los Angeles on July 15.
