The Television Critics’ Association press tour is taking place this week and today we heard from Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat on Season 9, whether or not he’d like to do a Doctor Who movie and a bit about the role Game of Thrones star Maisie Williams will play.
Though we still don’t know who Williams is playing, we do know what she won’t be. Moffat revealed that, “she isn’t playing a returning character or someone in the Doctor’s past. Her role will develop in an unexpected way.” He added, “Once you see what she’s up to in the show, you’ll appreciate what a clever [idea that was]. It’s a significant role. We’re not throwing her away.”So, not his granddaughter then? Sigh. Still beyond excited about her appearance, especially after hearing how Peter Capaldi fanboy’d over her on set. (He’s a huge Game of Thrones fan.)
He was asked about doing a feature film about the Doctor. Moffat said, “First that would be up to the BBC. What are we going to do? Shut down for a year and make a movie? Does everyone want that — a whole movie and not a series? If there’s a movie, you can’t have a different Doctor in the movie — that would be incredibly damning to the franchise.”
Doctor Who Season 9 will return on September 19 on BBC America.
