Welcome to the Legion!

Today Feminist Frequency and host Anita Sarkeesian have released a new video in the Women vs. Tropes in Video Games series which focuses on the idea of Women as Reward. The video discusses the idea of women as a trophy or reward for players, beginning with Samus in Metroid. Now, I love the game and I was as surprised as anyone else when it was revealed that the protagonist was a woman. This is not bashing the game. It’s looking specifically at the reward of less and less clothing on Samus depending on how quickly you defeat the game. I know it’s going to upset some people, talking about this. It always does. Please keep in mind, that as Sarkeesian says at the beginning of the video, it’s possible to critique some aspects of something you love without taking away from the parts of it that are good. Like me discussing the lack of women in the original Star Wars trilogy while still having an obvious obsession with the films and the franchise.

Check out the video below and let us know what you think in the comments. Speaking of comments, I know this is a topic that provokes some pretty extreme reactions. Discussion and differences of opinion are welcome and encouraged on Legion of Leia’s site and social media. However, abuse and harassment will not be tolerated. So tired of saying that, but it bears repeating.

*Please note. This video contains hyper-sexualized female characters and therefore has a content warning.
