sisters-feat

One of the best-cast comedies of the year gets a new poster.

Earlier today, Fandango revealed the new poster for Sisters, the upcoming comedy starring Tina Fey and Amy Poehler as the film’s eponymous sisters.  The poster features our two wonderful leading ladies sharing a bath while giving one another a half-contemptuous, half-charming stare down.  Both women are sporting shower caps, and reading hand-written diaries.

It’s worth noting that Poehler’s Maura is reading her own journal, while Fey’s Jane (whose “shower cap” is actually just a plastic Big Lots bag) is reading the journal of someone named Kate, presumably fished out of the box marked “Kate’s Sh**” in front of her.  Based on the first trailer which dropped a while ago, I think the most interesting thing about this film will be watching Tina Fey— the traditional (if offbeat) straight woman play Mel Gibson to Amy Poehler’s Danny Glover.   That’s a fun twist on this duo’s usual dynamic, both as individuals and as a comedic team.

That being said, something about Sisters still seems overly broad, a sentiment I also felt about Fey and Poehler’s last big-screen collaboration, Baby Mama.  The chemistry and energy between these two incredibly talented comedians was evident from the moment they shared the Weekend Update desk on Saturday Night Live, but while each achieved true greatness in their solo work in the years since, I feel that their tag-team efforts still have potential to transcend from “pretty funny” to become something truly amazing.  Maybe Sisters will finally be that project?  If not, it’s at least a safe bet that it will be pretty damn funny.

Sisters opens December 18th.
