While we don’t know exactly when Pacific Rim 2 will happen, a new comment from Guillermo Del Toro has given us a potential hint about a new face we may see in the sequel to the 2013 Kaiju versus Jaeger epic. The director tweeted about a meeting he had with Maisie Williams (Arya Stark, in case you didn’t know), and he was characteristically enthusiastic about wanting to cast her as a Jaeger pilot:
Had lunch with Maisie Williams yesterday. Remarkable. Dammit- if PR2 happens, that girl is getting a Jaeger.

For now, this is just an offhand comment. Pacific Rim 2 isn’t officially slated, and only Del Toro and co-writer Travis Beacham even know the status of the script. So casting is obviously a ways off… but I SO hope this turns out to be true. Maisie Williams is a great actress, capable of commanding a scene despite her small stature. Her work as Arya has proven that she can handle both gravitas and action, and her off-screen personality proves she’s got a silly streak that would fit in perfectly with Del Toro’s offbeat style.
I love the first Pacific Rim, but I do feel that the cast was the weak link of the production. The supporting characters like Charlie Day‘s Newt and Idris Elba‘s Stacker Pentecost were great, but Charlie Hunnam‘s Raleigh just fell flat for me. In a perfect world, I’d love to see the sequel stray farther from centering on Raleigh, to become a true ensemble picture with more interesting characters being played by good actors. Williams would be a step in that direction, for sure. Fingers crossed!
