Welcome to the Legion!

Six Russian women are taking part in an experiment in a spaceship to see how an all-female crew would do on a roundtrip mission to the Moon. The women will spend eight days in a small multi-room area at Moscow’s Institute of Biomedical Problems, according to Yahoo news. Pretty cool, right? They did with with a bunch of men back in 2010 for 520 days as a Mars flight simulation. I’m going to bet those guys never got comments like this from Institute’s director Igor Ushakov. He said, “I’d like to wish you a lack of conflicts, even though they say that in one kitchen, two housewives find it hard to live together.” Because too many lady parts in one room means snarling and wig-tossing, amirite?

Even better, the women participated in a press conference and apparently were subjected to questions about how they’d handle not having makeup and men for eight days. “We are very beautiful without makeup,” Darya Komissarova, one of the women in the experiment replied. Another, Anna Kussmaul said, “We are doing work. When you’re doing your work, you don’t think about men and women.”

So, here’s my question: Are the people commenting and asking these things serious? I mean it. I’m not being flip. Is this people just trying to be funny or do they really believe that women can’t be in a room together or function without face paint for eight days? Is it possible that this is actually a thing that someone believes? If so, I … you know what? I’m going to go read a book. There is only so much of this I can take in a single day.
