Though Marvel has declined comment, Deadline is reporting that the studio is in deals with New Zealand director Taika Waititi to helm the third Thor solo outing. Disney, meanwhile, has already set the film’s release date at November 3, 2017.
Waititi has little experience in the superhero genre, his only such credit being an appearance in 2011’s Green Lantern (he might be leaving that off his resume). But Thor is kind of the dark horse of the Marvel films, and consistently appears to be the least popular character to lead his own franchise (not unpopular, just the least), so it’s possible Marvel is willing to try a somewhat new approach with the Norse God.
However, Waititi has proven his skill with genre pictures. His collaboration with Jemaine Clement yielded the profoundly fun and unique What We Do In The Shadows, which showcased flying vampires and battles with werewolves. So perhaps Waititi won’t be so far out of his element.
After Kenneth Branagh, Waititi will be the second Oscar nominee to direct a film in the series.
