Universal has found their Little Mermaid in Chloe Grace Moretz! Currently shooting another Universal picture Neighbors 2: Sorority Rising and a few other films for the studio, it makes sense that they’d nab Moretz who has done awesome jobs on films like Kick-Ass 1&2, Let Me In and Carrie.

The Wrap reports that Sofia Coppola left this particular film because her decision to cast an unknown was rejected while Universal was hoping to find a lead in a known name in order to justify the huge budget.  So while it’s a step forward to a female fronted tent pole pictures, it’s also a step back for female directors not having faith put in their choices.

Writer of Love Actually Richard Curtis is speculated to be penning the script based on the classic fairy tale by Hans Christian Andersen about the young mermaid princess who falls in love with a human from above the sea. Erik Baiers and Chloe Yellin will oversee the property for Universal while Working Title’s Tim Bevan and Eric Fellner will be on board as producers. The film is is executive produced by Liza Chasin and Amelia Granger.

Here’s hoping that another female director will take the reins for this film.

Are you excited for the Little Mermaid? Who would you like to see in the director’s chair?
