Original Story Follows
Just days after fulfilling his dying wish to see Star Wars: The Force Awakens, Daniel Fleetwood has passed away.
You may have heard the story of Daniel Fleetwood over the past few weeks. Suffering from spindle cell sarcoma, a rare type of tissue cancer, Daniel was only given months to live. Even though he survived his original prognosis of just a few months, it was clear he would not make it to the December release of the new Star Wars film.
Determined to fulfill his dying wish, Daniel’s wife Ashley took to the internet and began a fan campaign called #ForceForDaniel in order to get him an early screening of the film. The campaign went viral and was a rousing success that gained the support of noted Star Wars: The Force Awakens actors such as Mark Hamill, Carrie Fisher, John Boyega, Daisy Ridley and Warwick Davis.
On November 5, Ashley posted on her Facebook page:
“To all our wonderful supporters, friends, family and awesome strangers: Daniel’s final dream was just granted!!! Today the wonderful Disney and Lucasfilms made his final dream come true, in the amazing typical Disney way, they really do make dreams come true!
Daniel just finished watching an unedited version of Star Wars: The Force Awakens!!! We would like to thank the awesomely talented JJ Abrams for calling us yesterday to tell us Daniel was getting his wish granted!”
Just a few days following this Daniel passed away, having fulfilled his wish. Early this morning his wife posted:
“He is now one with God and with the Force. He passed in his sleep and in peace. He will always be my idol and my hero. Please hug uncle Marc for me and give Lucy lots of kisses. Rest in peace my love.”
It’s a powerful story that shows the power of fans and what can be accomplished when we work to help one another. If you’d like to be apart of this you can contribute to Fleetwood’s GoFundMe campaign, which will help pay for his outstanding medical and end-of-life expenses, here.
