Welcome to the Legion!

All anyone is talking about is Lady Gaga’s performance last night. Which is great. Because that’s exactly what we should be talking about.

The 88th Academy Awards took place last night. The event was held at the Dolby Theatre in Hollywood, CA and was hosted by Chris Rock.

The event was star studded and awesome! – But the most memorable moment of the night was Lady Gaga performing her Oscar nominated song, “Til It Happens to You.” The song was written by Gaga and Diane Warren for the documentary, entitled The Hunting Ground.
For those of you who don’t know, The Hunting Ground is an incredibly powerful documentary about rape and sexual assault on college campuses.

The memorable moment began with Vice President Joe Biden, and author of the Violence Against Women Act, introducing Lady Gaga:

“Despite significant progress over the last few years, too many women and men, on and off college campuses, are still victims of sexual abuse, and tonight, I am asking you to join millions of Americans, including me, President Obama, the thousands of students I’ve met on college campuses and the artists here tonight to take the pledge,” Vice President Biden told the audience. “A pledge that says – I will intervene in situations when consent has not been given. Let’s change the culture. We must and we can change the culture. So that no abused woman or man, like the survivors you will see tonight, ever feel they ever have to ask themselves ‘What did I do?’ They did nothing wrong.”

The performance was truly breathtaking. Gaga sat at a large, white piano, and sang her heart out. About half way through the song, she was joined by a group of sexual assault survivors. The survivors had words written on their arms such as, “Survivor,” “You Are Loved,” and “Not Your Fault.”

For me, knowing that Gaga is a sexual assault survivor herself made her performance even more amazing – She was singing for herself, for those surrounding her, and for every other survivor across the globe. It was such a moving, beautiful, supportive, uniting, and empowering performance.
