Truism: No one enjoys rejection. While that may be accurate in most cases, some rejections certainly are more palatable than others, and Star Wars: The Force Awakens star Daisy Ridley has just shown herself to be a class act when it comes to letting someone down with humor and grace.

Back in February, a student by the name of Kevin Carlock – who attends Davidson College in South Carolina – made a music video intended to invite Ms. Ridley to be his date to the Spring Athlete’s Formal. Take a look:

“I think that you would enjoy Davidson much more than Jakku,” Carlock raps in his self-scribed anthem to the Star Wars actress. It is a funny, light-hearted solicitation that, by a stroke of luck, managed to find its way to Ridley’s attention recently, and it clearly touch her enough to garner a reply.

After discovering the video, Ridley took to her Instagram to give this very sweet and amusing response to her admirer, Mr. Carlock.

I don’t think we can go quite so far as to call this a “spoiler,” given intense staring contests probably are not covered by non-disclosure agreements. But nonetheless, it is clear from the actress’s all-caps note that Jedi-duty calls, and I am sure even Mr. Carlock must concede the future of the Star Wars franchise is not something to be trifled with.

Asking for a date is usually nerve-wracking under the most banal of circumstances. Asking a celebrity out in front of the whole internet takes a lot of guts. Kudos to Mr. Carlock and his crew for taking a chance on love. He may not have succeeded, but his efforts were still entertaining, and gallantly rewarded with a shout out from a next-generation Jedi. Which is a pretty decent consolation prize, if you ask me.
