Back in February, CBS announced that a crossover between their network’s freshman series Supergirl and affiliated network The CW’s The Flash was officially slated for March 28th. The CW has famously created a whole integrated DC TV universe with their flagship series Arrow, its enormously successful spin-off The Flash, and the recently debuted joint spin-off from both series, Legends of Tomorrow.
Exec producer Greg Berlanti is attached to all four properties, and has helped usher the highly anticipated crossover into fruition. While details about this momentous television event have been slowly emerging over the past month and half, Andrew Kreisberg (another exec producer on both shows) revealed quite a few more details in an extended piece published today at EW.
It was previously revealed that our two heroes are fated to meet up as a result of Barry’s travels through the multi-verse, which has been a major plot point of The Flash in season 2. According to Kreisberg:
“Supergirl has never heard of The Flash and Flash has never heard of Supergirl, so there’s a lot of like, ‘Wait, you’re the who, now?’”
He also discloses that their encounter will be distinctly light-hearted:
“Barry and Kara take a little bit of a leave of their problems for a week to engage in the kind of hilarious high-stakes high jinks that ensue when two superheroes wind up in the same universe”
Apparently there is also something of a love square(?) introduced by the arrival of Barry into Metropolis, according to Flash actor Grant Gustin. Although Kara already has two male love interests in the form of photographer Jimmy Olsen (Mehcad Brooks) and IT guy Winn Schott (Jeremy Jordan), there is still room, it seems, for a bit of a spark between her and the fleet-footed Barry Allen.
Gustin explained that while his brief visit as The Flash does not exactly leave time for a full out romance, they do “tease it a bit.”
“There’s undeniable chemistry, and they have a lot of things in common that they’ll never have in common with anybody else, obviously. This is the first person with powers Barry [has met] who’s using them for good”
EW’s exclusive includes many more details about everything from Barry’s unnerving encounters with Kara’s intimidating boss Cat Grant (Calista Flockhart), to the obligatory foot-race our supped-up heroes undertake in the name of friendly competition, and much more.
The crossover episode is scheduled to air Monday March 28th at 8pm on CBS.
