Welcome to the Legion!

simon-pegg

Though I’m very, very nervous about the casting and changes from the book for the upcoming film Ready Player One, this news is a balm to my rattled soul. Today THR is reporting that Simon Pegg, nerd king, writer and actor (Star TrekShaun of the Dead) will play the great and powerful Og, otherwise known as Orgen Morrow, the co-creator of the virtual world OASIS.

As you may know, Steven Spielberg is directing, Ty Sheridan will play the lead character, Wade, Olivia Cooke will play Art3mis and Ben Mendelsohn will play Nolan. The story is set around Wade, a young man in a dystopian near future where everyone spends most of their time in a virtual world. One of the co-creators of that world dies and leaves his fortune to anyone who can solve his virtual reality puzzles. The clues are all based in eighties pop culture. The book by Ernest Cline is brilliant and one of my all-time favorites, so I’m a bit nervous. Especially since Spielberg is reportedly not using his own ’80s properties. Still, Pegg just makes me happy.

What do you think of the casting? Are you excited for the film or as nervous as I am? Let me know in the comments. Ready Player One will hit theaters on March 30, 2018.

  • Ready Player One has become one of my favorites as well, and i learned about it basically because of you, it was mentioned on one of your post eureka shows. I got the audio book version and have probably listened to it at least 9 times by now, maybe more. I am also a fan of Simon Peggs work, but when I picture Ogden Morrow in my minds eye while listening to the book I’m seeing someone much older (i know with makeup maybe) and much taller. someone that looks more like Saruman (Christopher Lee). Maybe they can make it work and i’m not giving them enough credit, but when i look at Simon I do not see the great and powerful Og. reality is that they could have picked the guy from willow and i’ll still see this one 🙂

  • I love the man to death, but I always thought Morrow was more of Gabe Newell appearance wise. Sure Pegg fits him well personality wise but he doesn’t have the round figure or warmth of Og. Or maybe that’s just my interpretation of the character.
