HOLY CRAP HOLY CRAP HOLY CRAP HOLY CRAP HOLY CRAP HOLY CRAP!!! Breathe…breathe…
So in case you haven’t noticed by now, the second trailer launched today. The conflict between our favorite heroes couldn’t be more felt anywhere else than right here. So what the hell did we see in this emotional, action-packed, two-and-a-half-minute trailer of narwhals and rainbows and butterflies? Let’s break it down a bit.
DISCLAIMER: I am a total newb to this particular storyline in the Marvel Comics Universe. I just never read it. I know, I know, I have failed at life…
We’re transported to a icy wasteland and a lone mountain where we suppose contains a secret facility currently holding Bucky “The Winter Soldier” Barnes in captivity.
Captain America: “This job…we try to save as many people as we can. Sometimes that doesn’t mean everybody. But you don’t give up.”
I can only assume that Cap is referring to Bucky here, as well as the thousands of casualties in last three major disasters: New York, Washington D.C., and Sokovia (I guess London didn’t make the cut). Speaking of such cities, William Hurt as Thaddeus Ross doesn’t hesitate to play these back for the Avengers.
Thaddeus Ross: “Captain. People are afraid.”
And then, a very official looking stage blows up. It kind of looks like the equivalent to what the U.N. would look like in smaller meetings. There are a lot of microphones and headphones from which foreign dignitaries would be listening to translators. Oh look! Is that Chadwick Boseman, aka T’Challa/Black Panther, caught in the blast? (Feel free to click on the images to make them bigger)
Disaster after disaster, certain people need to be kept in check. Enter Tony Stark/Iron Man (Robert Downey Jr.). And whatever form that takes, he’s game. Note: this is the same guy who got so messed up after witnessing the other side of that alien portal that he created Ultron. He also wanted to build a fence around the entire planet.
So it’s safe to say that the next thing we see might be a super high security prison for the super-enabled. In the middle of ocean. Which can only be accessed by helicopter.
Captain America presumably is not down for this, and Tony is a tad frustrated that they’re not agreeing on certain terms.
Captain: “I’m sorry, Tony. If I see a situation pointed south, I can’t ignore it. Sometimes I wish I could.”
Tony: “Sometimes I wanna punch you in your perfect teeth.”
Next we see Captain America pursuing Black Panther, who is chasing after Bucky Barnes. The first two men are on foot while the third is on a motorcycle. Black Panther catches up and takes down Bucky. Dayum!
Captain: “I know we’re not perfect, but the safest hands are still our own.”
Cue Tony Stark quickly activating an armored glove from his ordinary-looking wrist watch, which can stop a bullet at point blank. Okay that’s pretty cool. Always the innovator, that Tony.
Then we get a few quick shots of Cap running though a crumbling building, Bucky taking aim at someone (in front of him), and War Machine (Don Cheadle) getting shot out of the sky. That’s it. This moment, as far as we know from looking at this this trailer, someone has drawn the line.
Tony: “I was wrong about you. The whole world was wrong about you.” There are dramatic cuts to Bucky and Cap’s faces as Tony says this.
Then we cut elite soldiers emptying out of a truck, guns a’blazing. Natasha Romanoff, aka the Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson), engages two soldiers with one of her swanky takedowns.
Tony: “They’re coming for you.”
Natasha: “I’m not the one that needs to watch their back.”
It’s curious that she says this considering we’ve seen Black Widow on #TeamIronMan. Could she be talking about the government being more nefarious than they let on sometimes? Or could she be talking in favor of #TeamCap because, despite what side she chose, she’s still Steve’s friend?
Captain: “This doesn’t have to end in a fight, Tony.”
Tony gives Captain a defiant look, tilting his head to emphasize the shiner on his right eye. Then he clocks Cap and armors up.
A few more quick clips of Captain America running through a building, which the trailer makes it look like Iron Man is blowing up. And then Bucky and Black Panther are going toe-to-toe, only to be interrupted by bullets spraying down on them from a helicopter.
Black Widow wearily stands in front of an explosion at an airport in Germany.
I’m actually not surprised that Scarlet Witch (Elizabeth Olsen) would be pitted against The Vision (Paul Bettany). I see Scarlet Witch as a sort of Chaotic Good type of character, whereas The Vision is more along the lines of Lawful Good. She’s totally owning him here, by the way.
Then there’s this awesome team-up between Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) and Ant-Man (Paul Rudd).
AND IS THAT MUTHA UCKIN’ CROSSBONES?!
We come back to Iron Man and Captain America, the latter who is beaten and bloodied. Iron Man charges up his hand blaster at Cap and says, “Stay down. Final warning.” Cap, breathless, looks back and puts up his dukes.
The the ultimate team clash. #TeamCap versus #TeamIronMan.
AND THIS!!!!! THE BIGGEST REVEAL OF ALL!!!!!!!!!
Spider-Man (Tom Holland) looks like he’s still in early development in this clip, and I felt a little unsettled that he was able to move his costume’s eye holes with such emphasis, but ERMAHGERD! It’s finally happening!
So what did we miss? Let us know in the comments below! Also, feel free to nerd all over it.
