Welcome to the Legion!

The following recap contains massive spoilers (DUH). Please don’t read ahead unless you are perfectly ok with that fact.

The wait is over and Season 6 of Game of Thrones is here! I honestly can’t believe the wait is over. This has been one of the worst waits, for me, in all of Television history. The cliffhangers we got last season were just plain mean.. but that’s ok, since the torture is finally over.

The season premiere opens with Jon Snow’s dead body still lying in the blood soaked snow where he fell. Jon’s dire wolf, Snow, is howling and trying desperately to get to his master. Davos Seaworth walks outside to see what the noise is all about, and finds his fallen friend. Others come to investigate as well, and Davos instructs them to get him inside. They place him upon a table and shut his eyes. While Jon’s supporters are wondering whom they can trust, Melisandre knocks on the door. She enters and is clearly upset by the fate that has befallen our precious cinnamon bun. She says that she had seen Jon in the flames, fighting at Winterfell. Davos tells he cannot speak for the flames, but that Jon is gone.

Later, Alliser Thorne holds a meeting to announce his involvement in Jon Snow’s death. He explains that he killed Snow because he felt that Jon Snow was going to destroy the Night’s Watch. Thorne admits that Jon always did what he thought was right, but that what he thought was right would eventually lead to the undoing of the Night’s Watch.

We are then taken to Winterfell, where Ramsay Bolton is mourning the loss of Myranda, his lover who was killed by Theon Greyjoy during last season’s finale. Ramsay’s father, Roose Bolton warns Ramsay that even though he has beaten back Baratheon’s men, it is not the same as beating back a Lannister army. He also chastises Ramsay for allowing Sansa Stark to escape. Ramsay will be nothing without an heir, and without Sansa, he has no chance at an heir.

Ramsay Bolton Mourns Myranda

Meanwhile, Sansa Stark and Theon Greyjoy are fleeing Ramsay’s hounds. They decide to cross a freezing river, in hopes that the hounds will not follow. Crossing is difficult, but they eventually make it and find refuge under a fallen tree. They share a brief moment of respite before they hear the hounds coming yet again. Theon decides to make a break for it, in order to take the attention away from Sansa. He is caught, and tries to convince the Bolton men that Sansa is dead. They do not believe him, and the hounds find her despite his efforts. Just as it seems all is lost, Brienne of Tarth and Podrick Payne come riding in to save the day. They are able to dispatch Bolton’s men with a little help from Theon. After the conflict is over, Brienne swears her allegiance to Sansa, who accepts this time.

Jamie Lannister’s ship returns to King’s Landing from Dorne. When Cersei Lannister learns of her brother’s return, she is excited. She assumes that she will be reunited with her daughter, Myrcella. However, the poison administered when Ellaria Sand kissed her killed Myrcella. (River Songed BOOM) Jamie does his best to console Cersei, who is thinking about what Myrcella will look like once she begins to decay. Myrcella was the one salvation that Cersei felt she had in her life. Cersei felt that if she could make something as pure and good as Myrcella, then maybe that means that Cersei herself wasn’t so bad. Jamie tries to apologize for his failure, but Cersei explains that he couldn’t have fought against the prophecy set forth years ago. Jamie promises that he will make everything right somehow.

Jamie Lannister's Boat Returns to King's Landing

In Margaery’s prison, the High Sparrow comes to her in an attempt to console her. Margaery wants to see her brother, Ser Loras Tyrell, but she is not allowed. The High Sparrow explains that he is not there for her brother, but that her husband, Tommen Baratheon, misses her. He tells her that if she would just confess her sins, that she would be released.

Doran Martell and Ellaria Sand are in Dorne discussing their brother Oberyn. Doran wishes he could have been an adventurer like Oberyn. As Doran and Ellaria are speaking, a servant approaches the prince with a message informing him of Myrcella’s death. Ellaria, Doran’s own sister, then stabs him in the heart. She chastises him for not truly knowing his people and their needs. His last words are of his son, Trystane, but Ellaria tells Doran his son is weak, and that weak men will not rule Dorne again. We are then cut to Trystane making Myrcella’s eyestones for her memorial, when two women enter and kill him.

Tyrion Lannister and Lord Varys, the Spider, are walking in the streets discussing their predicament. Danaerys Targaryen has not returned after having flown off on her dragon, Drogon‘s, back, and their supporters are growing restless. They also have no idea who the leader of the dissenters is. As they are talking, bells start ringing and a panic ensues. They go to investigate, to find that the entire harbor, including all the ships, has been set ablaze.

Ser Jorah Mormont and Daario Naharis are searching for Danaerys. They find the last spot we saw Khaleesi and Drogon, but they are not there. Ser Jorah eventually finds the ring that Danaerys dropped when the mystery group confronted her. He knows now that she was there, but has since moved on.

The Dothraki that claimed Danaerys are speaking about her in ways that clearly shows they don’t realize she knows Dothraki. Danaerys’s facial reactions to what they have to say are priceless. They bring her to their Khal, who is about to tear her clothes off when Danaerys finally breaks her silence and speaks to them in their native tongue. They cannot believe that she speaks their language so well. She tells them that he was wife to Khal Drogo. The Khal then apologizes for his behavior, since it is forbidden to lie with another Khal’s widow. Danaerys then asks to be escorted back to Mareen, but they refuse. She is to live out the rest of her days with the other widows of Khals.

In the streets of Braavos, Arya Stark is blind and begging in the streets. The Waif approaches her and throws her a staff. The Waif then commands Arya to fight. Arya can’t see, and therefore gets the tar whipped out of her. After a few beatings, the Waif tells Arya that she will see her tomorrow, and then leaves.

At the wall, Thorne let’s Davos and the rest of Snow’s supporters that they will be allowed to leave as long as they thrown their weapons down by nightfall. Davos tells him that they will let him know their decision soon. However, Davos knows that as soon as they open their door, they will be slaughtered. He suggests that they turn to Melisandre, as he has seen the power that she has.

We are then cut to Melisandre who is looking at herself naked in a mirror. She removes the necklace she always wears, and is suddenly transformed into an old lady… like.. a really old lady. She then climbs into bed and goes to sleep.

I can’t express accurately how excited about this season I am. We are past what the source material had to give us, so even though I’ve read the books, I honestly have no clue what is going to happen next. It’s interesting to see how the show is handling changes from the source material. Overall, I’m really happy with the direction the show is taking, and I absolutely cannot wait to see what happens next.

Game of Thrones airs on HBO on Sunday nights at 9PM ET.
