Welcome to the Legion!

In celebrating of Alien Day yesterday, 20th Century Fox released the first photo in their upcoming movie, Alien: Covenant, featuring a photo of a crew patch for the ship, also named Covenant.

Previously titled Alien: Paradise Lost, Alien: Covenant is definitely drawing inspiration from Catholic imagery. First of all, Paradise Lost is an epic poem by John Milton which tells the story of the Fall of Man, the Temptation of Adam and Eve by the fallen angel, Satan, and the couple’s subsequent expulsion from the Garden of Eden. But now that the movie is called Covenant, it could imply a whole different direction in the story. The word itself can mean a number of things:

  • A relationship/agreement between two parties (i.e. king and his vassels, a deity and his followers, two regular people). They’re sometimes symbolically sealed with an animal sacrifice. Both parties are implied to be bound to each other until death (or forever in God’s case). If it’s a covenant with God, God is the one who enforces the agreement.
  • A conditional contract by present-day standards that is enforced by a civil government.

You’ll notice in the image above that the crew patch features the two angels from the fabled Ark of the Covenant, which holds the Ten Commandments.

I couldn’t begin to suppose what significance the Covenant imagery holds in this movie, but I wouldn’t be surprised if it involved Wayland Industries somehow making a covenant with a higher power. Maybe this is why they’ve been so damn tenacious about retrieving an Alien all these years!

Alien: Covenant the second chapter in a prequel trilogy to the original Alien anthology. It begins with the colony ship Covenant bound for a remote planet on the far side of the galaxy. There the crew discovers what they think is an uncharted paradise, but it is actually a dark, dangerous slice of hell. The sole inhabitant is a synthetic named David, survivor of the doomed Prometheus expedition. Does this mean he’s still just a severed head?

The Prometheus sequel stars Michael Fassbender, Katherine Waterston, Danny McBride, Demián Bichir, Jussie Smolett, Amy Seimetz, Carmen Ejogo, Callie Hernandez, and Billy Crudup. It’s scheduled to premiere in theaters on August 4, 2017.
