Freddie Stroma (left) as HG Wells and Josh Bowman as Jack the Ripper in ABC’s “Time After Time”

Upfronts continue to bring surprises, including a host of new shows that were picked up to give audiences something to look forward to in the fall. ABC seems to have made out very well, adding several dramas to their roster to replace now-cancelled series’ such as Castle and Nashville. The two most interesting-looking are “Time After Time,” which features HG Wells (Freddie Stroma) and Jack the Ripper (Josh Bowman) locked in a chase from the Victorian era to the present day via Well’s legendary time machine, and “Still Star-Crossed,” a period piece from Shonda Rhimes that picks up where Romeo & Juliet left off.

The trailer for “Time After Time” features a steampunk aesthetic and a love interest for Wells in the form of the investigator handling the case of two guys having recently popped out of Wells’ time machine as it sits on display in a museum. The trailer looks quite good, and it might be able to replace Sleepy Hollow in my roster! It was also created by Kevin Williamson, and he has an excellent track record with hit shows – Dawson’s Creek, the Scream movie franchise, The Vampire Diaries, etc. Check it out:

STILL STAR-CROSSED - ABC's "Still Star-Crossed" stars Wade Briggs as Benvolio, Lashana Lynch as Rosaline and Sterling Sulieman as Prince Escalus. (ABC/Ed Herrera)

“Still Star-Crossed” deals with the aftermath of Romeo and Juliet’s murder-suicide, as both houses erupt into war. To put an end to the way, it is decided that a Montague and a Capulet must marry to unite the families, but neither of the chosen couple wants anything to do with that (most understandably, I feel). This series also features Anthony Head (Giles from Buffy the Vampire Slayer!) as Lord Capulet and Zuleikha Robinson as Lady Capulet, who you might remember as Alana from Lost (she got blown up by a backpack of dynamite!) and the truly nerdy among you will remember her as an assassin from the brief X-Files spinoff, The Lone Gunmen. Since Shonda Rhimes seems to be ABC’s top content machine these days, this show looks to be worth a try come the fall. Here is the trailer:

What do you think? Do either of these look like something you’ll be checking out this fall?
