In a The Hollywood Reporter exclusive, the publication has learned that Margot Robbie is attached to reprise her role and will produce a Harley Quinn spinoff. The interesting part is that the untitled project will not be a solo film for our favorite anti-heroine. Instead, it will focus on a number of DC Entertainment‘s female heroes and villains, plus Harley.
Details haven’t been released, but one familiar name did reach the surface: Batgirl, who many fans already speculate will be played by Jena Malone, 31, when her character was a no-show in Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice. It’s not clear, though. Warner Bros. isn’t commenting.
Also being kept close to the chest at the moment is who is already penning the script. What we do know right now is that the scribe is a woman.
If Batgirl is to show up in the Harley Quinn spin-off, what are the chances this will be a Birds of Prey flick? Better yet, since this is still considered a Harley Quinn spin-off, maybe we’ll get Gotham City Sirens with Poison Ivy and Catwoman rounding out a female-led cast.
Sources tell The Hollywood Reporter that Robbie is 100% behind this project. Since landing the Harley Quinn role, she dove deep into comic book lore to learn as much as possible about the character. In doing so, she fell in love with DC’s other female characters. She herself brought on the writer to help develop the project and brought to the studio, which snapped the idea right up.
So who would you like to see join in on Harley Quinn‘s wacky antics on the big screen? Personally, I’m already in love with the Gotham City Sirens idea. Pre-New 52, GCS starred anti-hero/villain favorites Harley Quinn, Catwoman, and Poison Ivy. Together they wreaked havoc on Gotham City’s seedy underbelly. But mostly it was to reel in Harley’s insanity.
