Sleepy Hollow

Fox’s urban fantasy series Sleepy Hollow, based loosely on the well-known Washington Irving story, took a major and unexpected turn at the end of its recently concluded 3rd season. (SPOILER ALERT) In defiance of conventional TV wisdom, and to the probable detriment of their ratings, the series killed off Nicole Beharie‘s Lt. Abbie Mills, one of its two main protagonists.

When it was announced actress Beharie was leaving the show, many wondered if the network would attempt to keep the show alive, or simply fold over the loss of a lead, particularly one as popular as Abbie. Today, Fox did the unexpected and renewed the show for their 2016/17 line up.

Season 4 will feature returning stars Tom Mison as Ichabod Crane and Lyndie Greenwood as Jenny Mills, as well as recent season 3 additions Jessica Camacho as Sophie Foster and Daniel Reynolds as Lance Gross. No word yet when the 4th season is set to debut, but stay tuned.

Much like The X-Files before it, Sleepy Hollow got a lot of its entertainment value from the chemistry and dynamic between its two leads. Whether the show can find a new footing in the wake of Abbie Mills’ very controversial death remains, at this point, a very open question.
