The Hamilgown collection features dresses inspired by the Continental Army’s Blue Coats, General George Washington, Angelica and Eliza Schuyler, the Marquis de Lafayette, Thomas Jefferson, Aaron Burr, and, of course, Alexander Hamilton.
Elhoffer Design’s Hamilton-inspired Hamilgowns are a love letter to Lin-Manuel Miranda and his great American Musical that tells the story of America through the voices of America now. With her collection, designer Catherine Elhoffer outfits a gender swapped narrative through her women’s collection. Perfect for women who want to be a rule 62 version of their favorite male characters from the musical or be one of the Schuyler sisters.
Based on the Tony Award–winning costume designs by Paul Tazewell, Elhoffer’s hand-made line is a tribute to the beloved pop culture phenomenon that’s created quite the stir. If you don’t know much about it please listen to the cast album on Spotify (Turn shuffle off) or watch the Grammy and Tony performances on YouTube.
In what started as an idea to fashion herself an outfit to go see Hamilton in, Elhoffer’s spark turned into a flame that has expanded her geek fashion house to also include this unique collection. The line is what any Hamilton fan’s dream are made of. Her attention to detail with fabric-covered and metal buttons, cuffed sleeves, pocket flaps above side-seam pockets, epaulets, lace detailing, and more that creates a wearable version of the stage costumes. They’re also incredibly comfortable, create a coat look that’s really an optical illusion crafted from top-stitching and asymmetrical patterning. Oh-and they also have pockets!
Cosplayers and bounding enthusiasts can wear these to the show itself in NYC and tour stops or at conventions like San Diego Comic-Con.
Catherine hopes to showcase the collection to Lin-Manuel Miranda and Paul Tazewell with the hopes to bring the collection to a broader audience in an official collaboration with the production. If Hamilton fans signal boost this, we can make it happen!
