HBO‘s new programming president Casey Bloys just confirmed to EW that Season 8 of Game of Thrones will be its last. This isn’t a huge surprise, since show runners David Benioff and Dan Weiss have been clear about their plans to end the series after its 8th season. However, I think some fans, including myself, were trying to be a little hopeful that the HBO would find a way to continue our journeys through Westeros. It appears that Bloys shared this sentiment, too, as he had this to say about the show’s ending:

Yes. They [Benioff and Weiss] have a very specific plan about the number of seasons they want to do. Believe me, as the new [programming executive] coming in, if I could get them to do more, I would take 10 more seasons. But we take their lead on what they think they can do the best version of the show.

Honestly, as sad as this news makes me, I am also a little relieved by the news. I love Game of Thrones and I would hate to see it go on for too long. Eventually all good shows come to an end, or they get dragged on for so long that they are no longer considered to be good shows. Knowing Game of Thrones will most probably end on a high note brings me more joy than more tacked on and played out seasons would.

Season 7 of Game of Thrones will air Summer of 2017.
