Last weekend during San Diego Comic-Con, it was announced that Lupita Nyong’o was cast to play a character named Nakia in Marvel‘s upcoming Black Panther. Information on the movie is still pretty scarce, but the actor let slip a few details about her character in an interview with EW. Nakia is a member of the Dora Milaje, Black Panther‘s elite female bodyguards, who may have a complicated relationship with he squad’s leader, Okoye (played by The Walking Dead‘s Danai Gurira).
Nyong’o adds on a bit more to a Marvel red carpet reporter at the convention:
The story is that Black Panther’s leadership is being threatened by two foes that come together, and so Black Panther gets the help of the CIA and the Dora Milajei to try to defeat the enemy. Oh dear. Someone is going to fire me shortly. I have to shut up now.
OOOOOHHHHH! If T’Challa has to meet up with the CIA, does that mean we’ll see Everett Ross (Martin Freeman) again? After all, the two have had a long history in the comics, and to introduce them both in Captain America: Civil War doesn’t seem like a coincidence to me.
As for the two foes Lupita mentioned, how much do you want to bet she’s referring to Erik Killmonger (Michael B. Jordan) and Ulysses Klaw (Andy Serkis)?
Let’s get back to Lupita Nyong’o and Danai Gurira being cast as members of the Black Panther‘s elite guard. How bad ass is that?! I know nothing about Black Panther aside from his being the king of Wakanda and being married to X-Men’s Storm. It makes sense that the superhero would have a couple bodyguards with him every now and then. He’s a king who also plays superhero, for crying out loud. I never knew his guards were all women though. That sheds a whole new light on Florence Karumba‘s presence in Civil War (pictured above).
Damn it, I want to see a fight between her and Black Widow even more now!
