American Gods Concept Art/STARZ

We’ve been fed little crumbs of information here and there. Some casting choices have been announced along with a couple of promotional stills to tickle our senses and make us want more. As someone who’s been obsessively following this series since it was announced that ‘American Gods’ was going to be adapted into a television series, I have been waiting for San Diego Comic Con to arrive so I could get more information.

Well, Starz did not disappoint!

During today’s panel of the upcoming Neil Gaiman adaptation ‘American Gods’, Starz premiered the first trailer. We were introduced to the main character Shadow Moon (Ricky Whittle) as well as the mysterious Mr. Wednesday (Ian McShane) and Shadow’s deceased wife Laura Moon (Emily Browning). As we saw in the ‘American Gods’ trailer, there is a war brewing, a war that it appears Shadow will be dragged into whether or not he wants to be involved.

If you have not read the original story, the world of ‘American Gods’ is seeped in various pagan mythologies, the most prominent being Norse mythology. As seen in most mythologies, the main conflict is a battle of old gods versus the new gods. If you don’t believe me, I shall point you to Greek mythology as an example of the common conflicts between old and new.

Starz also made the surprise announcement that Kristin Chenoweth has been cast as Easter, formerly Ostara, for the upcoming series. Easter is an old goddess in the series who is struggling to adapt and maintain her relevance in the modern world through chocolate bunnies and Easter egg hunts. I, personally, feel that this is an excellent casting choice.
