Disney has announced that they will be remaking the 1984 classic Splash, but with a bit of a twist. As reported by Deadline, Channing Tatum (Magic Mike) will be taking on the role of the mermaid originally played by Daryl Hannah (Kill Bill), and Jillian Bell (22 Jump Street) will take on the role played by Tom Hanks (Toy Story). Normally I am not very excited by remakes, but this is an exception for me. I can’t wait to see what Tatum does with the mermaid character. He proved in the Jump Street movies that he is more than capable of taking on a comedic role, and I firmly believe he will do Splash justice. I’m also excited to see Jillian Bell as the Hanks character. She had me laughing so hard during 22 Jump Street that I felt as if I’d done a full ab workout the next day.
Written by Marja-Lewis Ryan (The Four-Faced Liar), Splash will be produced by Ron Howard (Cowboys and Aliens), Brian Grazer (24), Tatum, Reid Carolin (Magic Mike), and Peter Kieran. Imagine’s Anna Culp (Angels and Demons) is slated to executive produce.
The film is very early in production, but hopefully we will get more information and a release date soon. What do you think about this remake? Let us know on our Twitter.
