As first reported in an exclusive for TV Line, we have been provided with an image of Valerie Vale, a brand new character portrayed by Jamie Chung who was specifically created for Season 3 of Fox’s Gotham. Valerie’s introduction to the series is partially influenced by the ending of Season 2 after a bunch of villains escaped the psychiatric facility Indian Hills. Valerie Vale arrives to Gotham as the Gotham Gazette’s newest reporter and it appears that she has no problem making enemies, especially on the police force, if it’ll lead her to a newsworthy story.

In an interview with TV Line, Jamie Chung reveals her character’s police background and her general tenacity as a reporter:

“You find Valerie in the midst of it all asking the tough questions, trying to get to the core of the story.[…]I think the question is whose skin she doesn’t get under,” Chung laughs. “She’ll gives the cops a lead, but continues to show up — and that makes it difficult for them to do their job.”

Jamie Chung also teases in the interview that something may be going on between Valerie and a certain detective in the series: “Valerie quickly realizes the kind of danger one can experience when ‘dating’ Jim Gordon….” Considering how much Valerie Vale will get involved with the affairs of the Gotham Police Department, it is not at all surprising that she will be set up as a potential love interest to Gotham’s Jim Gordon. In a way, I’d also consider it a tad bit predictable. If the writers could flesh out her motivation for dating Jim Gordon as a way for her to get more information for her stories, I think that would be a more interesting approach that would reveal a more dualistic nature behind the character. It could also help contribute to Gotham’s whole concept of ‘heroes falling’, especially since the city of Gotham has a tendency to corrupt everyone within its vicinity.

What are your thoughts on this new character? Are you excited for Season 3 of Gotham? What do you think about all the new villains and characters will be introduced to as a result of what happened in the finale of Season 2? Comment below or tweet me your thoughts at @birdiesrunamok.

Season 3 of Fox’s Gotham premieres at 8 PM on September 19.
