Lucasfilm has just released information via USA Today and Entertainment Weekly on the merchandise that will be available for purchase in connection to the upcoming Rogue One film. We all knew the merchandise was coming. A huge bulk of sales come from the merchandise available and it appears that Lucasfilm may have taken note of the criticism they received when Star Wars: Episode VII came out.
This time around there appears to a lot of variety surrounding Jyn Erso specific merchandise, which makes the deep darkest depths of my heart so happy. One of my biggest gripes when Episode VII was released was the lack of merchandise that appeared to be available of Rey. I could never find Rey merchandise when I would go shopping in stores on or offline. If I did find anything, it was sold out long before I had even gotten to it. I was not alone in this challenge.
However, it appears that this time we may not have this problem again based off of the product images that have been released today. Entertainment Weekly specifically showed us all of the available Jyn Erso merchandise that would be up for grabs once they hit stores.
The rest of the merchandise is full of variety and can be divided based off of the various forces at work within the Star Wars universe. You have products that represent the Rebel Alliance, the Empire, and a variety of different starships to purchase. My favorite item so far that represents the Empire is the Director Orson Krennic, as played by Ben Mendelsohn, Funko. There is so much villainous evil trapped inside a tiny chibi-like figure.
Lucasfilm has also released a great fan-made Youtube film that perfectly showcases the merchandise that will be sold for the Star Wars spin-off film. It is shot in stop-motion and is the first part of a four part series of clips that will be released onto Youtube. The clip also serves to help promote a contest that is being thrown called Go Rogue, which invites fans to make videos using toys and costumes based off of the upcoming film. The Go Rogue contest opens on September 30th, so start plotting now. Check out the fan-made clip below to get an example for your submission for the contest.
The Rogue One merchandise will be available for purchase from Hasbro, Lego, Mattel, and other companies. You can start pre-ordering these products on September 2 aka tomorrow. The products will hit stores worldwide on September 30, 2016. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story will be released in theaters on December 16, 2016.
