As reported by The Wrap, Zendaya‘s role in the upcoming Spiderman: Homecoming may have been revealed. According to The Wrap’s sources, Zendaya is set to play none other than Mary Jane Watson. We already knew that the Disney star had been cast in a “key role” for the film, but we were left wondering as to which role it was exactly. She will star alongside Tom Holland (Captain America: Civil War) as arguably Spiderman’s most well known love interest.
Since Spiderman: Homecoming has been established to focus on Peter Parker‘s high school years, I find it a bit shocking that M.J. is going to be prominent. In the comics, we never even saw her face in a very Home Improvement-Wilson type running gag. Aunt May was always trying to set Peter up with M.J., but Peter always found a way out of it. Gwen Stacey would be the more logical choice for a love interest set around this time in Peter’s life, but who knows, maybe Gwen will make an appearance, too. There aren’t any details so far, but it will be interesting to see how the John Watts directed movie will play out.
Spiderman: Homecoming is set to release in theaters July 7, 2017.
