Welcome to the Legion!

Gotham3

Make no mistake for the next season of Fox’s Gotham…the villains are out and it’s time to play.

Fox has released a new promo, giving us another peak behind the curtain to show us what’s in store for Season 3. The Batman prequel series has progressively gotten more silly since its progressed but, honestly, I don’t mind silliness when we have had so many recent DC properties go the sullen and oh-woe-is-me route.

The new promo keeps up with the tongue and cheek silliness we’ve come to expect from the series as of late. The song choice (Metallica’s ‘Nothing Really Matter’) along with the serious actions and behaviors of the villains featured in the short are slightly reminiscent of Suicide Squad. Note: I’m placing a heavy emphasis on slightly. Suicide Squad is completely different from Gotham. Utilizing a song to increase the irony of a trailer has become the norm in action movies nowadays thanks to movies like Guardians of the Galaxy and, recently, Suicide Squad. And that’s what the recent Gotham trailer has done here.

As you watch the trailer, you’ll start getting ideas as to who the real big Bad of the season is. Yes, there are a cluster of different villains around and they are all relatively angry and powerful. However, B.D. Wong’s Hugo Strange is truly the one to look out for this season. The release of all the villains last season from Arkham only makes me think that unleashing them onto the city is one giant experiment  for Dr. Strange to calmly look down upon while taking copious amounts of notes.

The official synopsis of the season is this:

Season Three will peel back the curtain on the infamous criminal organization known as the Court of The Owls. With the Indian Hill escapees on the loose, JIM GORDON (Ben McKenzie) must take matters into his own hands as a bounty hunter in Gotham. He makes it his mission to find HUGO STRANGE (guest star BD Wong), the mastermind behind the horrifying Indian Hill experiments, and FISH MOONEY (guest star Jada Pinkett Smith), one of Strange’s subjects. Meanwhile, GCPD Detective HARVEY BULLOCK (Donal Logue) and Captain NATHANIEL BARNES (Michael Chiklis) remain at the forefront of the fight against crime in the monster-ridden city. Also, BRUCE WAYNE (David Mazouz), with the help of his trusted butler and mentor, ALFRED PENNYWORTH (Sean Pertwee), and former Wayne Enterprises employee, LUCIUS FOX (Chris Chalk), discovers there are still more secrets to uncover regarding his parents’ murders.

As the city sinks deeper into chaos, GOTHAM will continue to follow the evolving stories of the city’s most malevolent villains: THE PENGUIN (Robin Lord Taylor); EDWARD NYGMA/the future RIDDLER (Cory Michael Smith); SELINA KYLE/the future CATWOMAN (Camren Bicondova); BARBARA KEAN (Erin Richards), TABITHA GALAVAN/TIGRESS (Jessica Lucas) and BUTCH GILZEAN (Drew Powell). The series also will catch up with the future POISON IVY (Maggie Geha), who, after an encounter with a monster from Indian Hill, finds herself reborn as a young woman who’s harnessed the full power of her charms; and will dive into the origin stories of JERVIS TETCH/MAD HATTER (Benedict Samuel), a talented hypnotist teetering on the edge of madness; and the TWEED BROTHERS.

I’m excited for this upcoming season. Not just because I’m a lover of villain, especially cheesy villains, but because there will be tons of chaos and opportunities for Jim Gordon and Bruce Wayne to grow this season.

What do you think of the trailer? Are you excited for more villains? Check out the trailer below and let us know your thoughts.

  • After just two episodes, this show seems to be drawing a lot of negative reviews. However, most of these come from comic-book uber-fans, resentful that there are no capes and masks in the show. Of course, that’s exactly the point – this show is about the mythic Gotham *before* it exploded with ‘super’ heroes and ‘super’ villains. It uses the dark, surreal *style* of the Batman comics to ask some fascinating questions about morality and the relevance of ‘extreme’ characters in the real world.

The seventy-plus-year-long Batman saga is fundamentally a fable about morality. It asks if one man can make a difference, against inconceivable odds. The limitation of the premise is that this one man has amazingly super-human abilities – a vast intellect, enormous wealth, Olympian athletic abilities, and few, if any, human frailties. Gotham, the series, obviously wants to dig a little deeper. Could such a person exist? And if he doesn’t, what can normal people do in his absence? In the real world, the activities of a Batman are supposed to be carried out by the police. But we’re seeing the police increasingly losing its way – tasked with upholding absurd laws, often pitted against the public they’re meant to protect and serve, increasingly isolated and compelled to act out of self-interest rather than altruism.
