Steven Spielberg is bringing the dystopian novel Ready Player One to cinematic life. As we’ve discovered from photos released today on social media, he’s focusing his filming in the UK and, from September 6 to September 10, will be be specifically filming in the the Birmingham area. Although the production crew has been trying to keep the set dressing under wraps, it is difficult to do so on social media. Take a look at some of the pictures released on social media so far.

We’re seeing some retro graffiti, which the world of Ready Player One is full of. Much of the world is in disarray due to the embrace of VR technology as an escape from the real world. As the citizens of the world cling onto their virtual reality escape, there is a darker force at work behind the scenes. Does this sound familiar to anyone? Cue my awkward wink wink nudge nudging now.

The synopsis of the book is as follows:

In the year 2044, reality is an ugly place. The only time teenage Wade Watts really feels alive is when he’s jacked into the virtual utopia known as the OASIS. Wade’s devoted his life to studying the puzzles hidden within this world’s digital confines—puzzles that are based on their creator’s obsession with the pop culture of decades past and that promise massive power and fortune to whoever can unlock them.

But when Wade stumbles upon the first clue, he finds himself beset by players willing to kill to take this ultimate prize. The race is on, and if Wade’s going to survive, he’ll have to win—and confront the real world he’s always been so desperate to escape.

Ready Player One is set to release on March 30, 2018, so there is quite a bit of time to read the book and catch up on all the social media announcements until then.
