Over the weekend, Lionsgate and Saban released the very first teaser trailer for the upcoming Power Rangers movie reboot. Considering how many years this reboot has been in the works, there was a lot riding on the teaser trailer to satisfy fans of the original series and assuage fans of their fears concerning the potential ruination of a series that they hold near and dear to their hearts.
The new trailer tries to do what many reboots have done over the years, which is add a little realism to the formula. Instead of the stereotypical goody goody teens of the past, we have teens that are a blend of characteristics and not just cardboard cutouts of stereotypes. If you remember the original series, it was very stereotypical in its portrayal of the characters. Another thing that the trailer is attempting to do is combine grittiness with teen-friendly shenanigans, which may or may not work in the studio’s favor. Right now, I’m getting a very heavy Chronicle–vibe, which apparently is a comparison being made a lot about the new trailer.
One thing that I am definitely super okay with is how the names for the teens in this reboot are the same as the ones from the original Power Rangers series. It’s one of many little wink wink nudge nudge moments in the trailer that I really love.
I do have a question about something Rita Repulsa (Elizabeth Banks) mentioned in the trailer. She mentioned having killed other Rangers before. If anyone has followed the different Power Rangers incarnations after the TV series, we do know that there are other various types of Power Rangers out there. However, this mentioning of her killing Rangers before begs the question of whether or not we are dealing with alternate realities or different universes in this reboot. Or maybe she’s talking about the past on a different planet before she got encased in that weird glass structure thing? So many theories are happening in my head right now just based off that one sentence of hers.
After releasing the trailer this weekend, Lionsgate also released new images featuring all five of the Power Rangers in civilian clothing, providing us with a glimpse of their individuality outside of the suits. Make sure you check out the images below.
