Today it was announced that Suicide Squad will be getting an extended cut when it is released on Digital HD and Blu-Ray. Supposedly there will be an additional 13 minutes worth of footage that will be included on the various versions of home release, which may either improve or detract from the movie itself.
Why is this so significant? There has been controversy surrounding Suicide Squad and what was presented to us in theaters. The director and writer of the film David Ayer has increased the controversy by stating that what we saw in the theaters was not all that he shot while on set:
“We have a chunk, there’s definitely over 10 minutes of material on there. But this cut of a movie is my cut, there’s no sort of parallel universe version of the movie, there released movie is my cut. And that’s one of the toughest things about writing, shooting, and directing a film, is you end up with these orphans and you fucking love them and you think they’d be amazing scenes and do these amazing things but the film is a dictatorship [laughs], not a democracy, and just because something’s cool and charismatic doesn’t mean it gets to survive in the final cut. The flow of the movie is the highest master.”
Personally, considering the amount of criticism Suicide Squad received, I’m not sure that adding an additional 13 minutes is going to do anything else to make the film better. Yeah, we may see more of the Joker which, given the criticism Jared Leto received for his acting in the film, it may be best that we don’t watch that additional 13 minutes.
The Ultra HD Blu-ray, Blu-ray 3D Combo Pack, and Blu-ray Combo Pack will all include both the theatrical cut and the extended version of Suicide Squad, and the extended version will be available to own on Digital HD. The Digital HD will be released as early as November 15, 2016. The Blu-Ray will be available December 13, 2016, which is just in time for Christmas shopping.
