Director Taika Waititi (What We Do in the Shadows) took part of a Reddit AMA this week where he discusses a little about his upcoming superhero film, Thor: Ragnarok.

“You can expect a Taika-esque tone. They’ve been very accepting of my style,” says Waititi when asked if his Thor film would match the humor in the previous two. “I’ve had a big influence on story and character and tone. It’s just like how I make my other films except way bigger. So far I’ve been given a lot of creative freedom. Thanks!,” he added in another answer, the question regarding how much influence did he had on the film personally. In fact, the only real difference between a Marvel production and his previous, smaller films is the challenge of “dealing with the amount of people.”

“There are literally hundreds more crew members than I’m used to,” he says, “I gave up remembering anyone’s name months ago.”

Waititi even touches on the film series’ logo change. “The style is inspired by 70s / 80s sci-fi fantasy art. Because our film feels like that.”

“I made an effort to ignore the fact there are other Thor films,” he said when asked about how different or similar his film would be compared to the previous two films. “I think [Thor: Ragnarok] will be one of the most adventurous and most ‘out there’ of all the Marvel movies,” he wrote. “It’s a crazy movie.” He also admitted that he “didn’t bother trying” to fit his film into the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe. “They tell me nothing [about Guardians 2, Doctor Strange] and that’s the way I like it. I have to concentrate on my film and make it the best.”

That’s good to hear. Some of the movies within the MCU have definitely suffered a little by being too concerned with the larger universe than its own story. Keeping them a little, or completely, isolated is refreshing change of pace (even though this wouldn’t exactly be the first flick to do so).

As for the rumors concerning a Doctor Strange appearance in the stinger, Waititi says that there is “probably a reference.”
