WONDER WOMAN

In an exclusive by Variety, the producer, director of the upcoming Wonder Woman film, and president of DC’s Entertainment reassured fans that the tone of Wonder Woman would be considerably lighter than previous Warner Bros. and DC collaborative films.

Critics in recent years have complained about the darker and joy sucking tone of films like Superman, Batman V Superman, and this summer’s Suicide Squad. The seriousness and general pessimism that has been trickling into each of the DC films has worried fans everywhere that Wonder Woman, a character not known for cynicism or brooding, would be getting the dark touch that has infected the DC cinematic properties over the years.

However, it appears that we will be getting a spot of positivity with the upcoming Wonder Woman movie:

“Wonder Woman is very different in tone and style than ‘Batman v Superman’ and ‘Suicide Squad,'” said Deborah Snyder. a producer on all the of the films. “We pick directors who have their own points of view, so that each of our films will have their own personality.”

Much of the change in tone appears to be connected to Wonder Woman’s stance on fighting. In comparison to DC heroes like Superman and Batman who have had a tendency to get sucked into the heat of battle and forget about the real purpose of their battles when overcome by their need for vengeance, Wonder Woman has always approached things differently, which will be reflected in the film:

“Her armor, the shield, the lasso, and so forth are what you could describe as defensive weapons as opposed to offensive weapons,” said Nelson. “That’s a pretty good way to think about the way she fights. She’s not choosing to fight for the thrill of battle. She’s fighting because she believes in something and she’s quick to put down that sword when the opportunity is there.”

I, for one, have been hesitant to get immersively excited about the new Wonder Woman film due to how the DC films have turned out so far. Each one has had promised since Christopher Nolan’s departure but, ultimately, have fallen flat. Warner Bros. decision to have Patty Jenkins as the director, a person who’s doing her damnedest to do justice to the character and the DC Universe has livened up my spirits:

“Patty has really taken a very inclusive approach and tried to weave a lot of these disparate elements into one cohesive whole,” said Jim Lee, DC Comics publisher. “Fans who have been reading ‘Wonder Woman’ for decades will be really blown away by how [the film] synthesizes the origins and brings her into the modern era.”

I think it is awfully telling that Warner Bros. and DC have decided to do damage control before the release of this film. I’ve mentioned it in previous articles that they need to start listening to the concerns of both the critics and the fans before their sales start to be influenced by the predictability of a formula. I think it’s a good step forward for both companies. Maybe this film will turn out to be what they’ve assured us fans to be. Until then, all we can do is wait for more clips and trailers. The judgements will be made then.

What do you think of this information? Do you think I’m being too harsh? What do you think of the idea of Wonder Woman being a lighter film compared to previous Warner Bros. DC films? Let us know in the comments below.
