BBC wants Doctor Who to feel like a “brand new show” when Broadchurch writer Chris Chibnall comes to take charge of the show. In other words, expect another shake-up in 2018.

Insiders say Chibnall wants to start with a “clean slate” for his first series on Doctor Who. That’s potentially bad news for newcomer Pearl Mackie who plays the Doctor’s newest companion, Bill. She hasn’t even made her formal debut yet!

Mackie is said to have only signed on a one-year contract and is expected to depart with the current Doctor, Peter Capaldi, and the current writer/producer Steven Moffat after 2017’s Christmas special.
Those of you ailing to have the Time Lord be your fantasy boyfriend again, you might get your wish in a couple years. Whoever will replace Capaldi as the Doctor is likely to be a younger actor in a bid to help boost declining sales of figures, books, home videos, and toys. One source tells Mirror that “BBC management wants a return to the format from the David Tennant era, when you had a dashing male lead and young female companion.

The source continues to say that “Merchandising has dropped off sharply in recent years and there is a strong desire to boost the show’s popularity among kids.”

Next year’s show is expected to air on BBC in the spring rather than autumn to avoid clashing with another popular show, Strictly.
